Topic

The popularity and adoption of Agile methods and practices across a wide range of industries and organisations in the last decade has impacted both positively and negatively upon traditional project management knowledge, performance and personal competencies, including associated tools and techniques. There are unrealistic expectations that project managers with traditional project management competencies can seamlessly be assigned to manage Agile type projects.

In his research Clinton set out to examine, through a series of nineteen semi-structured interviews and a systematic review of available literature, how the adoption of Agile practices has impacted on traditional project management competencies. The analysis of data collected shows that the adoption of Agile practices has markedly impacted on certain aspects of traditional project management performance and personal competencies, including associated tools and techniques. In contrast, knowledge competencies remain relatively unaffected. The insights drawn from the thematic data analysis help contribute to a better understanding of how traditional project management competencies need to adapt to meet the growing adoption of Agile practices.
