Topic

Managing risk (and opportunity) is a commonplace expectation of most management roles within organisations and projects. The processes involved are not always presented in a simple and objective way and frequently require technical expertise that has to be unpacked and applied carefully.

Sometimes, risk approaches appear well intentioned but can have a counterintuitive effect. With many industries required to prove a “risk-based approach” to hazards and other challenges, or to comply with risk criteria that are frequently subjective, providing a high level of fidelity to risk management benefits from simplicity, clarity, transparency, reiteration and a healthy attitude to what ‘risk’ really is.

Grant will overview the latest risk management process defined in the International Standard ISO 31000 and highlight touchpoints and frequently contested elements. Using diverse examples, anecdotes and encouraging audience interaction will lead participants to cut through the fuzziness of the overall concept of risk and apply the risk management steps with more clarity and practical output than a simple focus upon compliance or ‘box-ticking’.
