How Mega Projects are Highlighting the Inadequacies of the Engineering and Construction Industry. An overview of the state of the industry, an introduction to the cultural and systemic problems that fuel the prolific nature of project failure, and how project professionals and organisations can go beyond their technical proficiencies to become more effective on projects, for more sustainable and successful project outcomes.
Statistical facts prove that our industry is unquestionably one of the most wasteful. Our projects predictably waste obscene amounts of money and we perform at almost the lowest rate of production of any industry, suggesting there are profound insufficiencies in how we work. The modern demands on us, as project professionals in our industry, is to bring about a more sustainable future. But we can’t even get the basics right on our projects! Something has to change, and fast.
This presentation investigates the cultural and systemic problems that fuel the prolific nature of project failure. We identify why our hard industry is neglecting the “soft” essence that is exacerbating our predicable decline.
We focus on, and almost tether ourselves to the technical and administrative realms, with the procedures, standards, strategies, plans, systems, contracts, charts and methodologies. But evidently, that’s not enough!
In this presentation we look into this, lifting the lid on our current ways of working. We will also unpack what we can do to get the industry up off its back and to the forefront of professionalism, for more successful project outcomes.
