Speaker: Eranda Bandara
Topic: From Zero Experience to Twenty Homes: What My First Project Taught Me.
In this talk, Eranda Bandara shares a deeply personal and formative early career experience that shaped his approach to project management for decades to come. In 2004, while working as a management trainee in Sri Lanka’s travel and tourism sector, his role was transformed overnight when the tsunami struck, causing widespread devastation across the country. With communities displaced and urgent humanitarian needs emerging, Eranda's destination marketing role unexpectedly turned into a project management role
Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand how core project management principles naturally emerge during crisis situations, even when no formal frameworks or structures exist.
2. Recognise the importance of emotional intelligence in sustaining project momentum during highly emotional and challenging circumstances.
3. Develop strategies for engaging diverse stakeholders—including volunteers, donors, and beneficiaries—while navigating uncertainty, ambiguity, and emotional complexity.
4. Appreciate the value of maintaining an open mind and a commitment to continuous learning throughout the project lifecycle.
